Château Lafon Rochet

Chteau Lafon Rochet

Ref: A042209

4eme Cru Classé St Estèphe

In 2007, Basile Tesseron joined his father Michel, to help manage the 45-hectare estate which is ideally situated in a single block over looking Lafite-Rothschild and Cos d'Estournel. With the arrival of Dubourdieu as consultant at the same time, there has been a big leap upwards in quality and their 2009 is a very important wine, showing off real St. Estèphe classicism but with a rich, intense black fruit and a very refreshing backdrop. With the vineyard planted to 50% Merlot, Basile Tesseron has put a great deal more than usual in to the second wine to ensure that the grand vin benefits from as much Cabernet as possible. Very dense and unctuous but with that tell-tale 2009 freshness. Beautifully crafted. [Drink: 2015-2035]

The origins of this domaine date back to the 16th century, making it one of the oldest in the Médoc region.

At first, the “Rochet” vineyard was part of the vast Roussillon Valley fiefdom. Then in 1650, when Antoinette de Guillemotes marries Étienne Lafon, a Counsellor in the Bordeaux Parliament, she offers him, as part of her dowry, the “Rochette” land which she inherited. As such, the Lafon and Rochet names are also joined together.

Lafon-Rochet then embarked on two centuries of winemaking adventure. In the early 18th century, a period affectionately nicknamed “The Planting Frenzy”, Étienne de Lafon purchased parcel after parcel of land to increase the size of the Rochet domain.

His descendants followed his vision, continuing to acquire and regroup the parcels which now give us the domain we see today.

1995 was an excellent year, dominated by Merlot. Slowly reaching its peak now, full of rich fruit with superbly balanced, ripe tannins and perfect balance. A wine of great elegance.

Vacqueyras Cuve Azalais 2012
Recently, Robert Parker put Serge’s wines in to the superstar category but, typical of the man, he has maintained our allocation just as it was before, despite phenomenal demand from the USA.

Les Terrasses Merlot/Syrah
Deep coloured with a bouquet of ripe cherry fruit, this is a very approachable wine with the emphasis on ripeness and "crunchy" fruit with excellent balance.
