Pol Roger Brut Vintage

Pol Roger Brut Vintage

Ref: A074308

Pol Roger was born on Christmas Eve in 1831, the first son of Pierre Charles Jean-Baptiste Roger, a lawyer based in Ay. Pol chose not to follow his father's footsteps, but received his support when he announced that he wanted to set up as a negociant or wholesaler. This he did at the age of seventeen using his father's business contacts as customers.

1849 saw the birth of the new Champagne house as Pol began to create his own cuvées rather than bringing in wine from other houses. The first Pol Roger Cuvées went on sale in 1853 and his sales in the first six months were 3769 bottles and 825 half bottles. Today that has grown to around 1.5 million per annum.

Pol Roger recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and is perhaps best known as Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne. The house is still family-owned and has a reputation for producing champagnes of great finesse and elegance which age very well.

2000 was a vintage that “came right” at the last minute, thanks to a fine Indian summer. Contrary to widespread fears, the resultant crop was healthy as well as abundant, and Pol Roger was able to declare the vintage. The growing cycle was a difficult one through most of its stages, one of its early features being the great gale which swept across Northern France on 26th December. The spring was wet and mild, but the sun came out for the flowering in the middle weeks of June. July opened with hailstorms on the 2nd, followed by three times the average rainfall for the month. If these rains were to determine the quantity, “Août fait le goût” and, despite some further scattered hailstorms the weather settled down to give dry and warm conditions for the picking, which began in the earliest Crus on 13th September.

The grapes came in in sound condition and produced musts with an average alcohol of 9.9º(slightly above the average for the decade), a total acidity of 7.6g/l H2S04, and a relatively high pH of 3.11. The available AOC yield was 2,000kg/ha., with 1600 kg/ha. deducted for the “réserve qualitative”. The equivalent of 318.4 million bottles were produced across the whole of the Champagne region.

Early tastings of the vins clairs showed good potential for vintage cuvées, with attractive fruit aromas, sound
acidity and good body and length. There was reasonable consistency across the cepages, with the Pinot Noirs
leading the others by a short head.
