Chiroubles Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Des Marrans

Chiroubles Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Des Marrans

Ref: A008712

After having experienced harvests in New Zealand and Australia, Mathieu Melinand took over as wine maker, from his father, Jacques, in 2009. This is a beautifully situated, 20 hectare estate, with vineyards in six appellations. Although situated in Fleurie, it is the Melinands’ wonderful vieilles vignes Chiroubles that is the real star of a group of meticulously made crus. Domaine des Marrans dates back to the late 19th century but it was really Mathieu’s father and mother, Jacques and Liliane, who took over the vineyards in 1970 and built up the domaine in to what is today. Mathieu strongly believes in the importance of the traditional Beaujolais method of vinification and does not use any “techno” wine making processes. He learnt, when making wine in the New World, that he needed to retain his region’s traditions and above all, reflect his terroirs in each of his wines.

There are two parcels of vines on steep hillside locations in the lieux-dits of “Les Côtes” and “Crozet”. There were 2 hectares of “Les Côtes” until the end of 2012, when ½ hectare of 80 year-old was pulled-up for later re-planting. This is an incredibly steep, south-west facing, hillside vineyard where the average age of the vines is still 55 years. There is a further hectare of Chiroubles at “Crozet” situated just south-west of the village, which Mathieu purchased in 2008. This is an east-facing vineyard with 60 year-old vines, planted on a similar soil to “Les Côtes” - granite with a clay/ limestone overlay. Minimum intervention is the Melinand’s policy in the vineyards, with low yields and late picking being primary targets. Although not certified organic, there is no use of man-made fertilisers or chemicals and the steep slopes are all hand-worked due to the lack of tractor access!

This is exquisite Chiroubles, as one would expect from such excellently sited vineyards and intelligent wine making. Deep purple with a floral and black cherry nose, this wonderfully fresh and ‘crunchy’ style Beaujolais has fine-grained tannins and great length and precision. Whole bunch, semi-maceration carbonique fermentation for ten days, using indigenous yeasts and careful extractive techniques (one pump-over per day and no délestages) is followed by a nine month élevage in 1/3 cement vats and 2/3 old foudres (large casks). There is only a very light filtration prior to bottling in June. 12.5% abv

Jim Budd "another good vintage from this far flung part of the Loire".
Bright raspberry flavours on the palate with an underlying complexity makes this an outstanding wine
