Malbec
Grown in the Cahors region of France for centuries but really only made more famous recently by its association with Argentina.
Characteristics: In Cahors this grape must make up at least 70% of the blend and it generally produces a wine which is very deep coloured and often quite tannic resulting in the need for patient cellaring to allow it time to soften. In Argentina it is has taken hold well and produces wines which achieve an intensity of rich, brambly fruit and intense gameyiness whilst avoiding being overly tannic.
Where is it found? Argentina, Cahors, South-Western France, Chile, South Africa.
Wines associated: South western France (sometimes called 'Côt', Argentina
Food matches: Beef, Venison, Cheese.
