Merlot
Easily one of the most important and famous red grape varieties which has been successfully grown the world over. Its most famous heartland in Europe is Bordeaux where it constitutes a very important element in this region's blends. The most important variety in Pomerol and St. Emilion. It has enjoyed tremendous success in California's Napa Valley as well as many Antipodean vineyards.
Characteristics: Rich, vibrant purplish reds loaded with plump berry fruitiness with almost a touch of dark chocolate on the palate. The greatest examples are often unfathomable in their youth and can need 20 or more years to yield up their hidden treasures.
Where is it found? Bordeaux, Languédoc, Northern Italy, California, Chile, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa.
