Tyrrell's Wines - POKOLBIN

The story of Tyrrell's Wines is inextricably linked to the story of wine in Australia. It is a story about pioneers, men and women who transformed the Hunter Valley of NSW, planted grapes there and looked for better ways to make wine.

English immigrant Edward Tyrrell planted his first vines in the Hunter Valley in 1858 establishing Tyrrell's Wines after receiving a land grant in apparently poor pastureland in the lee of the Hunter Valley's Brokenback range. He had 50 acres of vines on a 320 acre estate named "Ashmans" after the Tyrrell's English Estate. His first vintage was in 1864 and by the turn of the century the land had became recognised as some of the Hunter Valley's finest vineyard land and the basis for development of one of Australia's most successful privately owned wine companies.

Under the leadership of the late Murray Tyrrell, who strongly represented the interests of the Hunter Valley and its growers for over 40 years, this dynamic company has blossomed from an insignificant player to one of the most important of the few family-run firms still operating in Australia. Now under the direction of Bruce Tyrrell, wine-makers Andrew Spinaze and Mark Richardson, are producing an immaculate, utterly characterful range of wines of a consistently high quality.

Today Tyrrell's are a truly national company with vineyards established in Australia's premium wine growing regions - McLaren Vale, Limestone Coast and Heathcote - but still call the Hunter Valley home

Margan Family Winegrowers - BROKE, HUNTER VALLEY

Great wine is made from great vineyards, and great vineyards take thought and careful planning.

Andrew Margan believes that the right varieties need to be planted in the right regions and in the right soils with the vineyard having an appropriate aspect. They are now fortunate to have over 300 acres of some of the best vineyards in the Hunter Valley. Most of the vines were planted in the early 1960s by Lindemans. These rejuvenated vineyards, now known as Timbervines, are dryland planted thirty-five year old low-yielding vines, growing in the rich red volcanic clay deposits of the Fordwich Sill.

All the vineyards are hand pruned, hand worked and much prized. From these they produce intensely flavoured wines that are true to their variety and their region. These great old vines give them wonderful consistency in flavour and structure which is the hallmark our Margan wine style.

Andrew prefers to adopt a minimalist approach to winemaking and to let each grape variety speak for itself. His aim is to let the quality of the fruit shine through and not bury it by over-processing the wine. All of the wines are hand crafted in the Broke winery crushing between 500 and 700 tonnes annually, depending on vintage variations. By maintaining their current size the Margans control the product from the vineyard to the winelover, ensuring they produce wines of consistently high quality.

Andrew Margan grew up in Sydney in the 60s and his parents owned a vineyard in the Hunter Valley so from an early age he was a 'weekend vigneron.' His interest in the fledgling Australian wine industry grew and he spent school and university holidays working in the neighbouring winery, Tyrrells Vineyards. As well as two science degrees, Andrew had a hands on apprenticeship with the late, great Murray Tyrrell, one of the best wine makers of his time.
