Bordeaux (Pauillac)

Les Hauts de Pontet, PAUILLAC

The second wine of Château Pontet-Canet.

The extraordinary effort that Alfred Tesseron has made at Pontet-Canet has been clearly rewarded by the remarkable press that these wines have had in the past few years. Numerous ’Bordeaux-watchers’ are now comparing Pontet-Canet to a ‘super-second.’ Bordering the vineyards of Lafite and Mouton, there are just under 80 hectares under vine and the style of Pontet today has little to do with the austere wines that were the property’s trade-mark until the early 1990’s. The aromas show off masses of spicy black berry overtones whilst the palate is characterised by an unusual purity of fruit which is held together by super-fine tannins. The 1995 vintage is full of fruit with a generous lashing of softenting tannins and a complex, lingering finish. Cabernet Sauvignon 65% Merlot 30% Cabernet Franc 5%

Chteau Lacoste-Borie, PAUILLAC

This is the second wine of one of our favourite Pauillacs, Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, also owned by the Borie family of Ducru-Beaucaillou fame. We love the accessibility of this classic Pauillac - it is wonderfully full and textured with a dense. ripe fruitiness and surprising power. It is a wine that, in fine vintages, has excellent staying power and which can easily develop over six to ten years.

Chteau Pontet-Canet 5EME CRU CLASS

The extraordinary effort that Alfred Tesseron has made at Pontet-Canet has been clearly rewarded by the remarkable press that these wines have had in the past few years. Numerous 'Bordeaux-watchers' are now comparing Pontet-Canet to a 'super-second' Bordering the vineyards of Lafite and Mouton, there are just under 80 hectares under vine and the style of Pontet today has little to do with the austere wines that were the property's trade-mark until the early 1990's. The aromas show off masses of spicy black berry overtones whilst the palate is characterised by an unusual purity of fruit which is held together by super-fine tannins. The 1996 vintage is very much a show-stopper with exceptional depth, ripeness and super-soft tannins whilst the 1998 is going to turn in to a wine of great depth and complexity.

Chteau Pichon-Longueville-Baron 2EME CRU CLASS

Bought by the AXA insurance company in 1987 from the Bouteiller family (after 54 years' ownership), this formidable, 50-hectare estate was, until recently, managed by Jean-Michel Cazes of Château Lynch-Bages (et al.) and due to his efforts, has re-emerged as one of the true 'super-second' estates producing wines of real brilliance. These are classic Pauillacs with a meaty, sinewy, rich cassis fruitiness and an intensity that only comes from very careful vineyard husbandry and immaculate wine-making. The 1994 is beginning to show its true colours with an attractively approachable suave fruitiness whilst the 1998 combines approachability with the rare balance of longevity. It is concentrated, complex and structured with a deep colour.

Chteau Lynch Bages, 5EME CRU CLASS PAUILLAC

Owned now by Jean Michel Cazes the château was originally owned by the Lynch family who were descendants of John Lynch, a young Irishman from Galway who fled Ireland in 1691. In the 18th century, Count Jean-Basptiste Lynch, mayor of Bordeaux, inherited the estate and handed over management to his brother Michel Lynch, who was also mayor of Pauillac during the French Revolution.

Jean-Charles Cazes, highly respected in the Médoc for his experience in viticulture and winemaking, bought the property in 1934. With his son André, he devoted all his energy to Lynch-Bages for more than 35 years. In 1974, his grand-son Jean-Michel set about restructuring the estate

The estate's second wine is called Haut Bages Averous and they also produce a small amount of white. The soil at Lynch-Bages is gravel with a sub soil of marl and chalk - classic Pauillac soil structure resulting in wines of intense depth and structure.

Chteau Haut Bages Liberal, 5EME CRU CLASS PAUILLAC

A few explanations about this triple-barrel name : Haut Bages because the property is situated on the hills of Bages, a small hamlet between Pauillac and Saint Julien. Libéral is the name of the family who built up this winning property during the 18th century. Wine makers from one generation to another, over the years they grouped good plots of deep gravel sites, the largest of which dominates the Gironde estuary.

This Château is almost up at the top of the hill, just one small country lane separating the property and the highest point of the appellation. When the Château came on the market in 1982, the great names of the Medoc region fought to buy it. The owners of Château Chasse Spleen were to become the proud owners. Their first vintage was a success, in no way hindered by the fact that 1982 was an exceptional year for Medoc wines. Since then, the quality of the work carried out by the winning team has not slackened and the wine they produce is becoming more and more popular with all serious imbibers of claret.
