Burgundy (Côte de Nuits)

Red Wines

Domaine Chantal Lescure, NUITS ST. GEORGES

Prior to 1995, the wines from this substantial 24-hectare estate were sold to the négociant firm of Labouré-Roi in Nuits St. Georges. Tragically, in 1995, Chantal Lescure died, leaving the domaine in the hands of her son from her first marriage, Aymeric Machard de Gramont. He decided to move away from the négociant circuit and establish the domaine as a serious player in Burgundy. The first part of this process was to improve the state of the vines in the vineyards and to dramatically reduce the yields on the vines by introducing a tighter pruning process, abandoning the use of herbicides and pesticides and by systematically thinning out the grapes in July to increase their sugar content and intensity of flavour. This has now been successfully completed and, in 1999, Aymeric's wine-maker, the brilliant young François Charveriat, was given a free hand to construct a state-of-the-art winery in the domaine's old buildings at Nuits St. Georges. The results of this serious investment, and the team-work and motivation of François and Aymeric, have been exceptionally exciting and our tasting of the 2000 and 2001 vintages revealed some of the most thrilling wines we have tasted in Burgundy for many years. The domaine is very unusual in that it has extensive vineyard holdings in leading sites in both the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. Since the mid-1990's, Domaine Chantal Lescure has been making first-class red Burgundy, and in our opinion, the wines from the last two vintages are near to being world-class. This has been further emphasised by recent awards that the estate has received at the International Wine Challenge for its 1999 and 2000 vintages and from the prestigious 'Revue du Vin de France' who, when evaluating the best wines from the French 2000 vintage, rated the wines from Domaine Lescure as being amongst the finest red Burgundies from the vintage. More recently, France's most influential wine critics, Michel Bettanne and Thierry Desseauve sited the 2001's from the estate as having come out on top of nearly all their 'village' tastings of that vintage (Classement des Meilleurs Vins de France 2003). We can only but concur with this critique!

Domaine Ren Durand, COMBLANCHIEN

René Durand has an infectious sense of humour but is also an immensely talented wine-maker and a visit to his labyrinthine cellars cut into the Comblanchien rock (Comblanchien is renowned for its rose-coloured marble as well as its wines!) is always something we look forward to. This is the heartland of the Côte de Nuits Villages appellation (there are only 30-odd growers in the AOC) and the Durands' villages wines see 15% new oak and are always of Nuits St. Georges quality, combining an open, flamboyant fruitiness with ripe, integrated tannins. The Aloxe-Corton is simply the best we have tasted, exhibiting a concentrated, rich cherry-scented personality whilst the Ladoix Côte de Beaune has an alluring intense raspberry fruitiness and is deliciously ripe and supple. René Durand's Corton Grand Cru le Rognet is one of the region's iconic wines and is only available in tiny quantities. They are wines that warrant plenty of bottle-ageing to show at their most complex.

Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot, GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN

New, exciting discoveries in the Côte d'Or are almost unheard of these days as most of the up-and-coming growers have already made themselves known across the world markets. However, back in 1999, during a visit to the Côte d'Or, we had snatched a quick lunch at 'l'Hôtel des Cultivatuers' in Nuits St. Georges and were knocked sideways by the quality of a super-succulent Puligny look-a-like from Savigny-les-Beaune made, unusually, by a grower based in Gevrey-Chambertin! 'Mimi', the omni-present 'patronne', told us how to find the Dupont-Tisserandots and also pointed out that they made very serious Gevrey-Chambertins as well. She was not at all far from the mark! Hidden away in the Place des Marronniers in Gevrey, is an unassuming town house underneath which is an amazing labyrinth of cellars. Father Dupont is a quintessential Burgundian - full of impish humour, good wine and genuine advice. However, it is his son-in-law, Didier Chevillon who is the driving force behind this top-quality, 25 hectare estate. Until recently, the majority of their wines have been sold to Jadot and Faiveley, but Didier is now bottling a considerable amount of wine himself and has a serious restaurant following throughout France. These are hand crafted wines of the highest quality and are amongst the finest Côte de Nuits reds we have recently tasted. Now that we have established a track record with the family, we now have a decent allocation of some of their Premier and Grand Cru wines. The Mazis-Chambertin there is an emphasis on finesse and elegance but an amazing vigorous intensity of fruit ensures great length and class. The two Premier Crus (Petite Chapelle and Cazetières) are silky and opulent with concentrated black cherry fruit with a whiff of new oak.

Domaine Hudelot-Baillet

Joël Hudelot’s son-in-law, Dominique le Guen took over the wine-making here about seven year’s ago and has turned round a somewhat lacklustre domaine in to something that is now in the top echelon of Chambolle producers. Recently highly rated by la Revue du Vin de France and Gault Millau, their wines are being increasingly sought-after on the international market. Dominique is a strong believer in eco-friendly viticultural and wine-making methods and has spent a great deal of time in re-establishing the organic structure of the soil. The village Chambolle is incredibly pure and focussed and, for the 2004 vintage, some of the old vine input has been kept on one side and this new cuvee is as good as many a Premier Cru. The 1er Cru les Charmes is nothing short of quintessential whilst the Bonnes-Mares is extraordinarily concentrated, terribly complex and utterly exotic.

Domaine Chicotot

Our second visit to see Georges and Pascale Chicotot in Nuits St. Georges simply confirmed what an exceptional domaine this is. This is one man and his ladies, as the whole vineyard and cellar team is female! Georges and Pascale make their own wines, from different vineyard sites (although this is never shown on the label!) and are continually in competition to make the best wine. The Chicotots’ 2004’s are nothing short of superb and les Charmottes has an extraordinarily powerful nose of cassis and raspberries, with a distinctive cassis flavour in the mouth overlayed with a very clear Pinot Noir character. The 1er Cru Vaucrains is a monster with a lovely silky mouth-feel, great opulence and a majestic ripeness. This will keep going for a very long time indeed.

Domaine Ren Bouvier - FIXIN

Bernard Bouvier is the 4th generation of his family to take the reins at this impressive 17 hectare estate in Gevrey Chambertin and Marsannay. He believes that great wines are born in the vineyard and as such uses no fertilisers or herbicides, preferring to work with nature using a 'lutte or culture raisonnée' - attracting a pests' predators to the vineyard rather than resorting to chemicals. Yields are kept down to about 30 hectolitres per hectare and fermentation for the red involves a long, cold maceration followed by maturation in oak, about a third of which is new. No fining or filtration is used.

La Gitana Manzanilla, Bodegas Hidalgo
La Gitana Manzanilla, Bodegas Hidalgo
“La Gitana” is an absolutely classic example of this unique wine; it is beautifully balanced, fresh and delicate with a “touche” of sea-saltiness and a pure, nutty-fruit zestiness.

Vacqueyras Cuve Doucinello 2011
Recently, Robert Parker put Serge’s wines in to the superstar category but, typical of the man, he has maintained our allocation just as it was before, despite phenomenal demand from the USA.
