Italy - Tuscany

Riccardo Falchini - SAN GIMIGNANO

Situated in the rolling Tuscan hills outside the historic town of San Gimignano, this 35ha estate has been producing wine since 1964, from a variety of vines planted on the fossil-rich sand and clay soil. The cellars of the Casale, which was once a friary, were completely renovated and modernised in 1976 by the owner, Riccardo Falchini. He installed the most up-to-date machinery for cold pressing and temperature control, and introduced a specialised bottling line. Falchini produces a lovely, eponymous DOCG Vernaccia di San Gimignano - a lightly oaked, concentrated wine with the subtle aroma of fresh apples.

Cantine Baroncini - SAN GIMIGNANO

Of antique, noble and "certified" genealogy -the Liber Aetatum, the historical archive of San Gimignano, certifies landed ownership rights since 1489-,the Baroncini family perfectly expresses the success of an olive cultivation and viticultural production structure, according to the formula of the authentic tradition of San Gimignano.

From father to son, until the death of Jaures - the inspiration behind and promoter of the new course of the company - and his wife Ilva; to his children Bruna and Stefano Baroncini, the family business has built up and expanded the mosaic of its labels of quality over the years. Behind the label it isn't hard to recognise the components of the winning synergy: deep respect for the environment; love and devotion to the most characteristic of the products of these lands; marketing oriented business acumen and managerial ability.

Every form of ostentation is banned from the family history: the rhythm of the corks evokes the constant, soft rhythm of the footsteps of the winegrower in the vineyards, which has advanced steadily within the Baroncini family for more than 500 years!

Azienda Agricola Salviano - ORVIETO

The Salviano Estate has 2,000 hectares around the Tevere River between Todi and Orvieto on the banks of Corbara Lake in Umbria. It has been owned by the Corsini family for centuries and has about 60 hectares under vine, all of which are in the Orvieto Classico geographical denomination. Salviano Castle boasts cellars that were chiselled out of the tufo and travertine rock on the left bank of Corbara Lake.

Frescobaldi - FIRENZE

From their Catello di Pomino estate in the Pomino DOC, which is well known for its cooler, higher altitude vineyards, Lamberto Frescobaldi's Il Benifizio has taken on a completely different quality dimension, made predominatly from Chardonnay. As far back as the 14th century, the Frescobaldis have supplied wine to the English royal houses and courts of many European countries and the family archives have signed contracts for wine purchases from King Henry VIII. The modern-day estate really only established itself into its present form after World War II during which its property was virtually destroyed. They are now one of the leading producers of quality Tuscan wines, with 1,000 hectares under vines at eight estates. The company is owned by four brothers and produces well over seven million bottles of wine annually with 65% of that exported throughout the world.

Villa la Pagliaia - CASTELNUEVO BERARDENGA

This old estate is located in the Berardenga district in the south of Chianti Classico on the way to Siena. The pretty country villa to be found in the middle of the property was only built in the 18th Century, the original building dating from the mediaeval era. Pagliaia makes a relatively traditional style of Chianti with the focus firmly on good quality grapes; the fine and reserved 'Riservas' are testament to this philosophy.
The grapes come only from their own 350-400m altitude vineyards in the Chianti Classico zone and are hand-picked. The vines are on average 25 years old - yielding about 1.5kg of fruit per vine - 'guyot' trained and planted in pliocene soil with 25% rocky clay. Leonardo Bellaccini ferments and macerates on the skins for 20 - 25 days to extract the required amount of fruit, colour and tannins. The malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel to soften out the wine after which the wine matures in Slavonian oak for two years.

Felsina Berardenga - CASTELNUEVO BERARDENGA

Felsina's wines have never been better. Quite a statement when you stop to think about the wines that Giuseppe Mazzocolin, together with winemaker Franco Bernabei, have put together over the last twenty years. Felsina's vineyards are situated in the commune of Catelnuovo Berardenga on the southern border of the zone.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia - BOLGHERI

Lodivico Antinori' Bolgheri reds from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia are beautifully sculpted.
Le Volte is a selection of the best Mediterranean terroirs in Tuscany. The typical Tuscan grape variety of Sangiovese is combined with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Mediterranean expression of Sangiovese gives the wine opulence and generosity, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown in the region lend structure and complexity. Each grape variety was processed separately in small stainless tanks, to respect the different characteristics of each variety. Malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks after the alcoholic fermentation. The wine aged for 10 months in 2 - 4 year old barriques, previously used for Masseto and Ornellaia.

Poliziano - MONTEPULCIANO

Poliziano produce very elegant wines that reflect the beauty of the Montepulicano district. The grapes (Sangiovese, Canaiolo Nero and Mammolo) are sourced from 42ha of vineyards, yielding 60-75 quintals of grapes per ha. Fermentation, in stainless steel vats, lasts from 10 to 18 days, at a max temperature of 32ºC with skin contact. Ageing is for two years in wood, two thirds in oak barrels of varying capacity and one third in barriques, followed by a period of bottled ageing for 6-8 months.

Tenuta di Argiano - SANT'ANGELO IN COLLE

Giacomo Tachis makes particularly fine wines which are rich and powerful with a perfect balance. The Tenuta di Argiano estate was purchased by Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano, who was quick to employ Giacomo Tachis as consultant, and Sebastiano Rosa (once of Tenuta San Guido, and nephew to that estate's owner Marchese Incisa della Rochetta, who was responsible for the planting of vines at Sassicaia in 1944) as winery supervisor. Since that time this has become one of the most reliable estates in Montalcino, frequently turning out exciting wines, albeit in a modern, very accessible style.

Casanova di Neri - MONTALCINO

Casanova di Neri is in the northeast corner of the Montalcino region, but they also have two newer vineyards to the south, Le Centine in Sant'Angelo and Pietrodonice in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, first harvesting from them in 1993. These southern vines have created about as pure an expression of Brunello as you'll find. Hand harvested from this single vineyard. the grapes were fermented and macerated for 22 days and then aged in French oak barrels for 30 months with a further 18 months bottle ageing.

Poggio San Polo - MONTALCINO

Poggio San Polo is one of the rising stars in Montalcino. The Fertonani family purchased this wonderful estate in 1998 and it is now run by Silvia Fertonani, helped by her husband, Mario Calzolari, who is highly rated for his skill in the winery. Although she currently only has five hectares of vineyard, Silvia is planting another ten. Given the position of the vineyards and Silvia's determination to transform Poggio San Polo into one of Montalcino's top estates, we are convinced that this estate will soon join Italy's elite. The Sangiovese vines are approximately 10 years old and yield about 5 tonnes per hectare and the harvest in 2000 took place in mid October.
