Italy - Veneto & The North-East

Dal Cero - LUGANA DI SIRMIONE

The Dal Cero family have transformed the Ca' dei Frati property into a model of what a winery should be in this day and age and they now have 50 hectares under vine. They are now one of the best properties in Lugana. As with so many superb wine producers, much of the secret lies in the vineyard where the vines are trained low and planted densely. The result is a dramatic reduction in yield and huge increase in concentration. The quality of the fruit is accentuated in the winery where Igino Dal Cero is not afraid to lose simple, primary perfumes if it means that he gains weight, texture and complexity by allowing some vats to undergo malolactic fermentation. Once again, this distinguishes their wine from the vast majority in Lombardy and results in a wine of such fullness and length that would, if produced in Friuli, fetch twice the price it currently does.

Pieropan - SOAVE

"If Nino Pieropan wasn't a winemaker, he'd be a watchmaker," says Franco Allegrini, "it is because of his attention to small details of white wine making that his wines are so outstanding." Pieropan himself says that the quality derives from doing a series of small things right, "from the moment you pick up the secateurs to the time that the cork goes into the bottle." Pieropan's Cavarino has always been styled 'Soave Classico Superiore' but Nino thinks that the DOCG authorities have bastardised Soave and won't accept new rules and thus cannot any longer use the term 'Superiore'. The Calvarino vineyard, in the family's hands since 1901, remains a classic expression of Soave.

Zenato - PESCHIERA

The Azienda Zenato is owned by the Zenato family. Sergio Zenato founded it in 1960, motivated by his passion for wine and by the devotion to quality he had learned from his father Silvino. He pours into the making of his wines his energy and his talent, animated by an absolute passion for quality and by the determination to constantly eclipse past results. He has poured his efforts into the land as well, experimenting with new vineyard plantings. The crafting of his wines becomes a kind of ritual, which he celebrates together with his two children, Alberto and Nadia.

Tedeschi - PIETRO IN CARIANO

The Tedeschi family has been active in the field of wine growing and producing in the Valpolicella area for five generations. Nicolò Tedeschi founded the firm in 1824, stipulating the first deed of sale of some vineyards. Vines and wine were also the raison d'être and a way of upholding the good name and prestige of the family for his successors. For Lorenzo Tedeschi, for example, given the amusing nickname "damigiana" (demijohn) because he was always busy transporting demijohns of wine with his cart, and subsequently for Riccardo Tedeschi, considered by the inhabitants of Pedemonte to be a genuine patriarch. He was foresighted enough to decide to purchase the vineyards of Monte Fontana and Monte Olmi in 1918, considering them to be two premier cru. His work was then continued by his two sons Silvino and Renzo, the first completely dedicated to the meticulous care of the vines, the second committed to carrying on, together with his wife Bruna, the " Tedeschi style", making the family business known in Italy and around the world.

The most recent generation of the Tedeschi family is today represented by his children, Antonietta, Sabrina and Riccardo, the first responsible for sales in Italy and administration, the second a food technician and for years a researcher at the Institute of San Michele all'Adige, concerned with research and development, whereas Riccardo, an oenologist, deals with production and with sales outside Italy.

Allegrini - FUMANE DI VALPOLICELLA

The Allegrini Farm is located in Fumane di Valpolicella. Since the XVI century, the Allegrini family has carried on their agricultural activity at the rural Giara Court. Giovanni Allegrini, head of the latest generation, is considered an absolute protagonist of oenological history in this land, thanks to his competence and human qualities, while Walter, his firstborn son, who died prematurely, was able to valorise the winegrowing patrimony in an original and innovative manner, following the teachings of his father. The heredity of the company is today carried forward by Marilisa and Franco, with an ingeniousness and passion worthy of the unanimous approval of consumers and international critique.

At the Allegrini winery, their respect for the raw materials is the driving force behind their production. This credo allows them to express the grapes' full potential in each wine they make.

Ardesia - VENEZIA

The Pinot Grigio grapes come from 5 to 20 year old vines that are west-southwest facing and 250 - 300 metres above sea level. The vines are planted on loose, alluvial soil. Planting density is 4,500 vines per hectare with a yield of 100 to 110 hectolitres per hectare.

The grapes are soft pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The wine undergoes partial malolactic fermentation and is then aged for between 2 to 3 months in tank.

Italia - PAVIA

Produced from selected Pinot Grigio grapes grown in the Pavia region of north east Italy 50km south of Milan.

Traditionally, a major region for the production of sparkling wines, over the past 10 years Pavia has become an important producer of Pinot Grigio which is well adapted to the cool growing conditions. The wines exhibit the fresh, citrus fruit charaters typical of the grape with good weight and texture.

The grapes come from selected hillside vineyards and were harvested in the 1st week of September. After a gentle pressing and static clarification the juice was fermented in stainless steel at 16 to 18C using a combination of natural and cultured yeasts. The wine is bottled young, after 3 to 4 months on fine lees, to optimise aroma and freshness.
