Kim Crawford Wines - HAWKES BAY

Kim Crawford Wines was conceptualised over a glass of wine and founded because of a couple of babies. The glass of wine was in London, the night big and the company good. Kim and Erica Crawford and David Gleave MW pondered wine styles of the world with youthful self-righteousness and decided the world needed a clean, top quality, fruit driven Chardonnay devoid of the heavy oak used at the time. The two babies who arrived shortly after propelled Kim and Erica to realise the dream and Kim Crawford Wines was established in 1996. Four thousand cases of wine were produced. The fledgling company was one of New Zealand's first "virtual wineries": grapes were sourced from growers, the wine was made at other wineries and sales, marketing and admin managed from their central Auckland home. They had no name to call it by: no vineyards, roads or peaks, so they simply called it Kim Crawford Wines. The Kim Crawford label now needed a face, a place to visit and to taste wine, something which could not be done at an inner city home filled with toddler's toys. In 1999, the Crawfords were able to build a beautiful tasting room and cellar door facility at the coastal settlement of Te Awanga in Hawke's Bay. They did this with the help of a group of prominent Hawke's Bay grape growers headed by Jim Scotland. In the beginning of 2000, a state of the art winery was opened in Marlborough. The winery has enabled Kim to pick grapes at optimum ripeness without restriction of processing facilities, contributing significantly to improved wine quality. About the same time, the Crawfords bought vineyard land to secure grape supply as world-wide demand for Marlborough wines soared.

Ngatarawa Estate, HAWKES BAY

These are certainly not mainstream wines as Alwyn Corban grows his vines organically and tries to make wines that do not conform to the general pattern. The Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc manages to get away from the North Island flabbiness and has a fresh, crisp asparagus-based nose and positive, balanced fruit. The Chardonnay is sourced from their Gisborne vineyard and, although 100% barrel-fermented in new French oak, the extended lees contact it is given results a fruit driven, complex white wine. The Merlot/Cabernet is a classic with a very ripe, concentrated fruit supported by fine-grained tannins and a hint of oak. It is one of the finest reds to be found in North Island.

Southbank Estate, HAWKES BAY

Southbank Estate is a brand new 60 hectare vineyard established by wine investment specialist Ager Sectus, situated on the north-facing terraces of the beautiful Ngauroo River in Hawkes Bay. We were particularly impressed by wine-maker Matthew Mitchell's first release 2001 Syrah which was made from Dartmoor Valley fruit which has spicy aromatic aromas of blueberries and white pepper, a touch of vanillin due to ten months in a mix of new and seasoned French and American oak, but masses of textured, ripe fruit.

Schubert Wines - WAIRARAPA

Schubert is a new winery in New Zealand founded by Kai Schubert. Kai is a graduate from the German Viticulture and Oenology University in Geisenheim and his dream had always been to establish his own vineyard and winery one-day. This dream came true in form of "Schubert Wines" which is located in Martinborough in the Wairarapa Valley and operated by his partner Marion Deimling and Kai. They are both German and had been looking for an ideal area to grow premium Pinot Noir for quite a while. They searched in several countries including the U.S. (Oregon, California), Australia and France but in the end, the Wairarapa in New Zealand was the most interesting region to them. In October 1998 Kai acquired a small, established vineyard in Martinborough and about 40 hectares of bare land just north of Martinborough, at Dakins Road. On the land at Dakins Road the development with high density planting started in spring 1999 and now 12 hectares are under vines. Pinot Noir is their most important variety and was the reason for Kai and Marion settling in Martinborough where New Zealand's Pinot Noir history was born. The 2001 Pinot Noir was our first vintage.
