Cave de Lugny, LUGNY, MACONNAIS

Situated in southern Burgundy and, under the guidance of Paul Brunet, the Cave de Macon Lugny has, over the past twenty years, been making some of the best Crémant to be found in France. This Crémant de Bourgogne is made from 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay, resulting in a 'méthode traditionelle' with great finesse and style, and a soft, ripe and balanced fruitiness. They are one of the few producers who believe in an extra period of bottle-ageing before release on the market.

Domaine de la Presle, OISLY, TOURAINE

Frédéric & Anne-Sophie Meurgey-Penet are making some really outstanding Crémant de Loire sparkling wines; Sophie is the oenologist and her husband, Frédéric is a Bugundian with a great deal of sparkling wine experience. This young couple met whilst they were studying at Beaune and they have both worked extensively in Australia and South Africa. The Crémant has a firm, assertive flavour which is perfectly off-set against a creamy mousse and supported by a ripe, clean pure fruitiness and balancing acidity. It is made from Chenin Blanc (85%) and Cabernet Franc (15%) and this addition of Cabernet gives the wine its intrinsic quality and individuality.

Araldica Vini Piemontese - PIEMONT, ITALY

The Araldica group of companies is a major force in wine growing, production and distribution based in the Piemonte region of northwest Italy. Thanks to the combination of a modern attitude towards production and marketing with a commitment to producing wines that are identifiably Piemontese, the group enjoys ever-growing international success.

Araldica's Managing Director, eonologist Claudio Manera, is adamant that investment in the vineyards, as much as in other areas of the business, is vital to maintain the quality of the product. He believes that effective management can preserve that most important concern for the customer - value for money: "Our intention has never been to follow an idle dream of making a great wine that is then impossible to find or difficult to afford. Our broader ambition has been to provide a range that is both understandable and accessible. Quite simply, wine for drinking and enjoying."

Brown Brothers - MILAWA, VICTORIA

The dynamic, yet traditionally rooted family company of Brown Brothers, has been supplying us with premium Victorian varietals since the beginning of the 1980's. John Brown (snr.) passed away and sadly his wife Patricia died in 2004 but their sons will continue with the tradition of being Australia's leading varietal specialist, with some 35 different premium varietal wines being regularly or experimentally produced. This exceptional range of wines comes from their own Milawa, Mystic Park, Banksdale and Whitlands vineyards and they also operate an unusual 'Bonus Contract Scheme' with numerous growers in the King Valley, where they pay high prices for grapes on the understanding that each grower achieves the highest level of quality possible.

Mot & Chandon - YARRA VALLEY, VICTORIA

'Green Point' is on a spur of land running from Yeringberg Hill to the Yarra river, in the heart of the Yarra Valley. It is the home of Domaine Chandon Australia, where Green Point sparkling and Green Point still wines are produced. It is named 'Green Point' because in the 1850's the early settlers of the Yarra Valley observed that, each year, as summer advanced and the grass turned straw colour, this property remained green longer than any other . The reason for this is that the ancient alluvial soils at Green Point are deep and therefore retain moisture well into the summer. These soils combined with the Yarra Valley's cool climate, define a site with ideal 'terroir' for growing wine grapes. Domaine Chandon at Green Point was established in 1986 by Moët & Chandon to produce high quality sparkling and still wines that reflect in their aromas, flavours and structure the Australian terroir in which they are grown. Green Point are now recognised for their style and quality in Australia and 16 other countries.

Lindemans Wines - KARADOC, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

A graduate of London's famous St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Henry Lindeman discovered winemaking while travelling through Europe in the late 1830's. Fascinated by wine's medicinal benefits, he devoted much of his time to learning the skilful craft. In 1840, he returned to England to marry Eliza Bramhall and within weeks, the couple embarked on a four-month voyage to start a new life in the Australian colonies.
Concerned by the near-poisonous hard spirits of the early colonies, Henry Lindeman became even more devoted to the social and medicinal benefits of quality wines. With a successful medical practice behind him, he was soon able to turn his attention to winemaking and in 1843 he had planted his first vineyard on his 330-acre property 'Cawarra' in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. There, in the rich soils of the Paterson River flats, he planted Riesling, Verdelho and Shiraz grapevines and set about building a winery and cellar. One hundred years after Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first vineyard in the Hunter Valley the Lindemans Wine Company became a public listed company. The company once again flourished with this new injection of capital and vineyards were purchased in South Australia (Barossa Valley and Coonawarra) and another one was established (Padthaway).

Charles Melton Wines - BAROSSA VALLEY

Charlie Melton was one of the first to recognize the value and tradition of the Barossa's old vineyard Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre. At a time when others were pulling out vineyards of Shiraz to plant more fashionable varieties, Charlie was convincing farmers to keep their historic vineyards. He was one of a small group of winemakers who helped retain the viticultural heritage of the Barossa. Since the first vintage of Charles Melton Wines in 1984, this small Barossa Valley winery has gained both national and international recognition for its premium red table wines.
