One of the major benefactors of the globalisation of the wine world has been South America. They have been making wine down there for a long time but until modern technology became affordable, the quality was, let's say, lacking! Argentina, Chile and Uruguay have everything going for them when you think about it - great terroir, fantastic climate and controllable irrigation but until such things as stainless steel tanks came in affording them the opportunity to control the temperature during fermentation, they did not stand a chance.
Many of the wine makers today have travelled the world, not only seeing how other countries do things but actually working alongside them. Thus new ideas are imported back home and now all three countries are making tip top wines right across the quality spectrum.
