Description

Domaine Yves Girardin, Chateau de la Charriere

The Santenay Charmes is a bright garnet red colour. The nose has floral overtones such as rose , peony or violet , coupled with aromas of red fruits and some notes of liquorice . In the mouth, it is fresh and round and with a good finish.

100% Pinot Noir grown on limestone and clay from 35 year old vines, the grapes are hand harvested and sorted in both the vineyard and on a sorting table in the winery.

After their passage on the sorting table, the grapes are totally destemmed and then macerate for 15 days in vats. This period commences with 5 days cold maceration with the object of extracting the fruit characters from the grapes. This is followed by an increase in temperature during which pumping over and punching down liberates the tannins present in the grape skins. And finally, the temperature is raised to around 32?øC for 5 to 7 days to stabilise colour and tannins.

The wine is aged in oak barrels, of which 15% are new oak, for 10 to 12 months and after light filtration bottling takes place in the moon's waning phase.

The Girardin family have been wine makers for 13 generations, and the domaine developed in the sixties thanks to Jean Girardin, notably with the acquisition of Chateau de la Charriere. Having spent his childhood amongst the vines and in the cellar, Yves developed a passion for all aspects of wine and its culture.
It was in 1981 that Yves Girardin found himself with of 3 hectares of vineyards following the separation of the family estate of 12 hectares. Today, he owns 20 hectares thanks to the acquisition of vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet and Pommard .

Since the acquisition in 2003 of the family estate Chateau de Charriere, by Yves, the property has expanded with the construction of a new winery .
