Description

For the past few years, we have been working with John Stichbury, of Jackson Estate, to try and develop a unique Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from a multi-parcel selection of older vines. The grapes for the Green Lip Sauvignon Blanc were harvested from over 30 different blocks located in the Homestead Vineyard (where the original plantings of Sauvignon are) and the Stonewall Vineyard situated out towards the Wairau River.

Viticulturist, Geoff Wollcombe, harvested the grapes in cool morning conditions . As with all Jackson Estate Sauvignons made by winemaker Mike Paterson, the Green Lip was cool fermented for just under four weeks, ensuring maximum varietal character. Following a racking of its ferment lees, the wine spent several months in tank on its fine lees, further developing palate richness and flavour. The final blend of the various parcels was finalised in August, when the wine was bottled, using a minimal dose of SO2.

Now, with a year in bottle, the wine is beginning to show at its very best, exhibiting great varietal purity. It combines a dense, tropical and citrus fruitiness, with hints of basil and spiciness. The palate is wonderfully textured, with a laser-show of juicy fruit flavours balanced out by a scintillatingly refreshing acidity.

Jackson Estate embodies the very best of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and it is a testament to the vision of the Stichbury and Jackson families who have farmed the land at Runnymede, on Jackson Road, for over 160 years. The Green Lip Sauvignon Blanc is named after the native New Zealand greenlip mussel (perna canalicus) which is easily identified by their vibrant green and gold shell colouring. Harvested in the pristine waters of Marlborough Sounds, they are one of the world's most unique delicacies, making a perfect and natural accompaniment to the Jackson Estate Green Lip Sauvignon Blanc.
