Description

Bodegas Atamisque, Tupungatao, Uco Valley, Mendoza

Elegant and pale clear red in the glass, very fruity on the nose with overtones of cherries and strawberries. A soft and velvety palate with a good fruity finish.

Fermented in stainless steel at 25degC then spending 3 months in bottle prior to release, slowly but surely, Argentine Pinot Noir starts to be taken seriously, and not only those from Patagonia. This delicious offering from Atamisque's own Uco Valley vines fits the Serbal ethos perfectly - don't spoil a lovely young wine with oak! - it is all about fruit and pure varietal character. There is also an attractive plumpness and texture on the mid palate that you don't often see in wines in this price range. There's a way to go before the Argentines are up there with Marlborough, but this definitely kicks lower end Burgundy into the long grass.

Located in the district of San Jose in Tupungato, Uco Valley, this stunning yet simple winery is the first you will see on the famous 'Ruta del Vino', Route 86. The humble slate roofs and drably coloured walls host an extremely impressive modern facility, where winemaker Philippe Caraguel quietly plies his trade, bringing a touch of French restraint to the fruits of these 100% estate-owned vineyards, many of which boast some particularly old vines. Atamisque makes great Malbec, of course, but it is perhaps with 'other' varietals and blends that you will find the finest examples of Uco expression. Serbal Cabernet Franc, for example, is the most exciting and best value example of this grape that we have ever tasted, from anywhere. There are three, easy to climb tiers in the range - Serbal, Catalpa and Atamisque itself - all named after indigenous trees and shrubs that can be found growing amongst the vines.
